Grant County Sheriff’s Office investigating accidental shooting of George man

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post that it is investigating after a 61-year-old George man accidentally shot himself during a presumed mental health crisis on Tuesday morning.

GCSO says the man arrived at the emergency department at Quincy Valley Medical Center around 9:30 a.m. suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso.

Quincy Police reportedly questioned the man and determined it was likely that the injury was self-inflicted at the man’s home in George. The man was taken to an out-of-area hospital by air ambulance.

No one else was injured during the incident. BCSO says deputies and Major Crime Detectives responded to the home in the 100 block of Parkhill Road Southwest. They found the scene of the shooting, interviewed witnesses, recovered the weapon, and collected evidence, according to GCSO.

Investigators say the man suffered a mental health crisis and fired several times into the air. The man fell to the ground and accidentally fired a single round into his body. GCSO says detectives will forward their report to the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office for possible charges of reckless endangerment.
