On November 26, 2023 around 9:36 AM, the Eureka Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle near 2nd and M Streets, according to a social media post. During the stop, a 31-year-old white male occupant of the vehicle fled the scene. As officers were searching the area, the male was found near the rear of the library. The Eureka Police Department says a physical altercation ensued when officers attempted to detain the male.
During the altercation, the suspect allegedly produced a firearm. Shots were fired by officers striking the suspect. Life-saving efforts were made, but the suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene. EPD said in a social media post that a loaded firearm was recovered from the suspect at the scene. The Humboldt County Critical Incident Response Team, which is led by the Eureka Police Department and the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office, will investigate the incident.
The Eureka Police Department said the incident was captured on body-worn camera and will be released upon the completion of the investigation.
