The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that its deputies are currently investigating a shooting at a residence on Michael Lane in Sulphur. According to CPSO, deputies responded to the location around 11:30 p.m. on December 6.
CPSO says its deputies found 22-year-old Gavin Demeritt suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was pronounced deceased a short time later. Detectives say it was determined that four individuals were gathered in the room when the shooting occurred.
Authorities say Demeritt had been handling a revolver in a joking manner and manipulating the firearm carelessly. The firearm was allegedly given to a 16-year-old who continued to handle the gun in a similar manner.
The juvenile was likely under the impression that the firearm was unloaded. Authorities believe the juvenile began pulling the trigger until a round was discharged and struck Demeritt.
CPSO alleges that 20-year-old Gage McMichael removed two firearms including the one that was involved in the shooting and hid them in an outdoor shed. He’s also accused of removing a casing from the scene.
CPSO says the juvenile and McMichael were arrested on December 7. The juvenile has been booked into the Juvenile Detention Center on charges of Negligent Homicide and Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile.
McMichael was booked into the Calcasieu Correction Center on a charge of Obstruction of Justice.
