Brighton Police arrest 26-year-old for cruelty to animals

The Brighton Police Department has arrested 26-year-old Jose Castruita Reyes for Aggravated Cruelty to Animals and Cruelty to Animals. On August 21, BPD officers responded to a report of animal abuse at an apartment in the 700 block of Mather Street.

Property management reported a foul odor coming from the unit. At the unit, officers found that property management had entered the apartment and found at least one deceased animal.

It is alleged that Castruita Reyes had left the animals in the apartment alone for over two weeks. Two dogs had allegedly been left in kennels that had been wired shut. One dog was transported to the Riverdale Animal Shelter for care and evaluation.

The other dog was found deceased. The second dog had partially delivered a litter of puppies that were also deceased. Neither dog had access to food or water.
