The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of a sexual battery suspect 30 minutes after the alleged crime.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the Motel 6 at 2992 West International Speedway Boulevard around 4:30 a.m. after a victim went to the police station to report she had been sexually battered by an unknown male suspect.
VSO says the victim told detectives that she was alone in a vehicle outside the Motel 6 while her friends were in a motel room. The suspect allegedly approached the vehicle, pulled out a handgun, and forced her into the backseat.
After the suspect raped the victim, he allegedly took the victim’s cell phones and cash before fleeing on foot. The victim provided authorities with a full description of the suspect and his clothing.
VSO says a Sheriff’s Office lieutenant spotted the suspect, David Baker, just before 5 a.m. at the nearby Days Inn. The victim confirmed Baker was the suspect who attacked her when shown a photograph. Detectives say they found the stolen phones and a pellet gun when searching Baker’s room at the Days Inn.
Baker was charged with Armed Robbery (No Bond), Theft, and Possession of Cocaine. Additional charges are pending the results of DNA testing.
