The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting of a Towns County Sheriff’s Deputy. According to authorities, the deputy was shot during a traffic stop.
The suspect, who has not been identified, is described as a white man around 6 feet tall and weighing between 170 and 180 pounds. Authorities say the suspect was driving a 2010 or similar model silver Honda four-door sedan.
At the time of the shooting, the suspect was wearing a black beanie, gray hoodie, and black athletic pants. Shortly after 2 a.m., a Towns County deputy spotted a silver Honda sedan without a tag and attempted a traffic stop on Plott Town Road in Young Harris, Georgia.
Authorities say the driver stopped but immediately got out and walked towards the deputy. The driver did not obey the deputy’s commands. The deputy attempted to tase the man, but the taser attempt was not successful.
The deputy and the suspect were involved in a fight over the deputy’s gun leading to the deputy being shot. The man drove away in the Honda without taking the deputy’s gun. The deputy was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities ask anyone with information to call Towns County 911 or the GBI Tip Line at 800-597-TIPS.
