The Walton County Sheriff’s Office reports that a former ESE teacher has been arrested and charged with child abuse following a report of criminal misconduct involving a student in her classroom.
According to WCSO, it received a notification from the school administration at the Wise Center in DeFuniak Springs of a Department of Children and Families complaint involving ESE teacher Tonya Gainey.
WCSO says the school administration was informed of an incident that occurred the prior day and DCF was notified that evening. On Wednesday morning, administrators informed 57-year-old Gainey that she was being reassigned to remove her from having further contact with the student.
WCSO alleges that Gainey was uncooperative and refused to leave campus. She was allegedly escorted and trespassed from school property by the School Resource Deputy. Authorities say Gainey submitted her resignation by email in the midst of refusing to leave campus.
WCSO says video surveillance shows Gainey slam down the arm of a non-verbal three-year-old during lunchtime. Gainey is allegedly shown throwing away the student’s food and ignoring him for the rest of the period.
According to WCSO, the child can be seen crying and in pain. Gainey was arrested on Friday afternoon in Okaloosa County and transported to the Okaloosa County Jail where she awaits extradition.
