The Knoxville Police Department was involved in an officer-involved shooting on Tuesday afternoon. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will be handling the investigation into the shooting.
KPD reports that its officers responded to an active domestic situation involving a man armed with an axe outside a residence in the 2600 block of Fairview Street around 1:15 p.m. on November 12.
Police say the man was reportedly drunk, had smashed the window of a parked car, and was acting violent and belligerent.
KPD says its officers reached the scene at 1:20 p.m. and confronted the man who was still armed with the axe. Police say the man refused to drop the axe and made his way towards officers.
Officers opened fire and hit the man at least once. The man was transported to UT Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.
KPD confirms that no officers were injured.
