Eugene Police arrest man for manslaughter in fatal crash that took the life of 80-year-old

The Eugene Police Department has announced the arrest of a man after a crash took the life of an 80-year-old man. EPD reports that its officers responded to eastbound Beltline Highway near the River Road exit around 11:30 p.m. on May 12.

Authorities say a Dodge Ram truck had rear-ended a Cascade Cab Dodge Caravan taxi at high speed. The passenger of the taxi suffered significant injuries. A doctor was in the area and administered CPR.

The male victim was transported to an area hospital. The taxi’s driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital. EPD says the passenger, 80-year-old John Thomas Davenport, succumbed to his injuries on May 26.

On September 27, 2024, the driver of the Dodge Ram, 42-year-old Fernando Patricio-Hernandez, was arrested for DUI, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangering, and Manslaughter in the First Degree.
